If you are looking for the Triathlon race that has it all, then the EVES Surfbreaker Triathlon at Mount Maunganui is the race. This Iconic race has been on the Calendar since 1985, making it one of NZ’s oldest races.
The EVES Surfbreaker Triathlon breaks from the tradition & has the swim leg at the Mount Main beach in the surf. Some great names of NZ Triathlon have won here over the years.

Most frequent questions and answers
Registration will take place on Saturday 26th December at MYRIDE, Totara Street, Mt Maunganui from 12pm to 3pm. We ask that you attend this registration to collect your race-pack, which will include your race number, timing transponder & race info. Please provide your own swimcap ( let’s see what old event cap you can find )
If you are unable to make this registration time, someone else may register on your behalf.
Late entries will be taken at the registration with a late fee of $10.
WE WILL TAKE LATE ENTRIES ON THE RACE DAY with a late fee of $10. Please be early to help the registration Team.
Sprint Distance Tri – Draft-legal
- Swim 750m, 2 lap – Ocean swim with a beach start. Left-hand turns around the buoys. After 1st lap you will exit the water & return immediately back into the water ( No beach running)
- Bike 20km, 3 laps – Marine Parade to Turn-around @ #209 Marine Parade. Return to Turn-around @ Pacific Ave.
- Run 5km, 2 lap – Marine Parade to the Turn-around @ 65 Marine Parade. Return to the transition area. Last leg the Athletes will enter onto the Mt Main Beach for a 800m beach run to the finish.
Short Course Tri
- Swim 375m, 1 lap – Ocean swim with a beach start
- Bike 7km, 1 lap – Marine Parade, to Turn-around @ #209 Marine Parade. Return to the Transition area.
- Run 2.5km, 1 lap – Marine Parade to the Turn-around @ 65 Marine Parade. Return leg the Athletes will enter onto the Mt Main Beach for a 800m beach run to the finish.
Aquathon
- Swim 750m, 2 lap – Ocean swim with a beach start. Left-hand turns around the buoys. After 1st lap you will exit the water & return immediately back into the water ( No beach running)

- If you are entering on the day please be early.
- Get to the Transition area early.
- Don’t forget your transponder & don’t lose it or it will cost you $50.
- Please don’t park any where on the race course.
- You MUST attend the race briefing on race day, (7:00am) 20 minutes before your race start
- Please wear covered shoes at all times during the race.
- Please wear a helmet at all times during the bike section of the race.
- Please have your upper torso covered at all times during the race (except in the swim if you don’t wear a wetsuit).
- Turn up to race hard & have FUN
- Grab a coffee& lunch from the wonderful Cafe’s
- Visit the Mount Mainstreet before & after the event
- Low Tide 6:03am.
- The swim is a 375m triangle held out off the Mount Main beach. There will be members of SLSNZ on the beach & in the water.
- The Sprint race is a 2 lap swim of the 375m triangle. You will round a flag on the beach at the water’s edge.
- You will NOT be given a swim-cap but we ask that you provide your best/oldest/ event cap. We will provide if you forget.
- No fins, snorkels, paddles or flotation devices are permitted. You may wear a wet-suit.
- This can be any kind of pedal powered bike. No E-bikes. Please ensure the bike fits YOU.
- Road bikes would be preferred. If you ride a Time-trial bike you must not ride on aerobars whilst in the bunch.
- Helmets must be worn at all times. Please ensure this fits correctly. Helmet must be on before un-racking your bike & remain on till bike is racked after the bike leg.
- We do have road closure for the event, but please be aware that residents & businesses can still access the roads. We have marshals on all street corners.
- Please ride as close to the left-hand side of the road as practical & pass on the right
- Please remain alert through-out the entire ride as there maybe faster cyclists behind you that need to pass.
- There must be no form of listening/music devices on the course.
- Please wear shoes the entire time
- This is a run/walk leg. Please no skates, skateboards, scooters or any other device.
- Some of the run course is alongside the bike course so please run as close to the kerb as possible.
- There is also parts of the course that are 2-way runners. please stay to the left. (Just like driving on the road).
- Please no strollers/buggies on course.
- There is to be no MP3, I-Pods, phones, bluetooth headphones or any other listening devices on course.
- The last 800m of the run is on the beach. HAVE FUN.
- The Team race is a relay with a Team of 2 or 3 doing a leg each.
- The swimmer will start in the Team wave with the timing transponder on their ankle.
- The Swimmer tags the cyclist at the bike rack where your bike is. Please place the transponder around the ankle. The Cyclist must wear the helmet number.
- The Cyclist then racks the bike & tags & places the transponder around the ankle of the Runner. The Runner must wear the race bib number for the run.
- All Team members may run across the finish-line together. Please just be courteous to any other competitors finishing.

- 6:00am Transition area opens (Marine Parade, near the Surf Club)
- 7:00am Sprint, Super-sprint & Aquathon compulsory race briefing
- 7:10am Move to the start area
- 7:20am Sprint, Super-sprint & Aquathon race start
- 8:50am Elite race briefing
- 9:10am Elite Female race starts
- 9:13am Elite Male race starts
- 10:15am All racing completed
- 10:30am Prize-giving
Online entries will close on Thursday 24th December 2020 at 10pm. Then late entries will be taken on Saturday 26th December 2020 at the registration. These late entries will incur a fee of $10 + the entry fee.
We also have walk-up entries on the day which incur the $10 late fee.
You are able to transfer your entry to another Athlete with an Admin fee of $5. Please contact event organisers
If you need to withdraw from the race prior to race-day due to an injury etc, a refund may be issued with a $15 Admin Fee. There will be NO refunds after 6th Dec 2020. Please contact event organisers.
No refunds will be given due to cancellation of the event due to circumstances beyond the organisers control including, adverse/extreme weather conditions, natural disaster, any Civil Defence warnings (ie Tsunami ), earthquake, pandemic or any other event when it is deemed unsafe to safely host the event. Any decision is final and will be made in the interest of safety
Registered athletes for events that are cancelled due to Covid-19 by the local health authorities, will not be entitled to a refund, but will be entitled to have their entry deferred to – a new date for the same event, or any other event that is owned by Triathlon Tauranga ie: GENX/MarraTinman Triathlon, Marra Sprint Triathlon, Generation Homes Women’s Triathlon, Hampton Downs Duathlon.
There will be plenty of fantastic spot prizes at the event. Prize-giving will be held approx 15 minutes after the last athlete has crossed the finish line. Numbers will be picked at random. You MUST be present to receive your prize.
There will be medals awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd:
Super Sprint – U12, U14, Open Male & Female, Overall Team.
Sprint – U16, U20, 20-35, 35+, Overall Team.
Elite – Overall Male & Female.

You will be able to purchase Triathlon Tauranga race-belts @ registration & on the day for $10
The EVES Surfbreaker Triathlon is not the only Triathlon that Triathlon Tauranga host over the Summer.
There is the Tinman Triathlon on November 8th 2020, held at Pilot Bay, Women’s Triathlon on Feb 21st 2021 held at Pilot Bay, then finally a Sprint Triathlon on March 14th 2021 held at Pilot Bay.
